Sorry in advance for the title, I'll probably change it soon for something better, as soon as I think of something.
So, it's been a bit, hasn't it? Needless to say, I didn't feel much like blogging, at least not about my nerdyness... The last week and a half were kinda like a void of zero creativity, and zero desire to be creative... but yeah, I'm back again... good sign, right?
The last day or so have actually been a creative whirlwind, the comment in my last post of a 'dream/nightmare' army got me thinking... While I've given up (possibly temporarily) on a dream army led by a sorceress queen by the name of Mab, I've been getting more and more interested in Chaos Daemons.
Recently Games Workshop decided to release the new models and rules for the Blood Angels, which, at least in game play, are remarkably similar to my Angels of Reclamation. This frustrated me. Heh, I don't want to just copy a Games Workshop army, even though, in terms of game-play, I totally thought of it first! So, until I think of something new, or the buzz behind the new rules has died down a bit, I think I shall put my Angels on hold for a moment :P
But as I said, Chaos Daemons! Specifically 40k daemons, firstly because with the temporary shelving of the angels, I'm 40k-less, and secondly, because upon reading the rules to determine the possibility of a dream army, I found them to be so random and incongruous with the rest of the 40k world, they seem like they would be devilishly tricky to play, to play against, and a huge amount of Random fun :)
Oh yeah, and thirdly, because I read the rules for a gentleman by the name of Epidermis. Essentially, he sits on the battlefield, and as units of Nurgle cause wounds on the tabletop, you keep track of them. As you pass certain thresholds, ALL of your Nurgle units get more and more powerful!
I should take a moment to explain, in the Cosmology of 40k essentially the 'bad humans' are those affected by "chaos", raw energy from another dimension that enters into our universe through huge tears in space-time. This other dimension is ruled over by the Four Ruinous Powers, the Lords of Chaos. The are Khorn, God of rage, slaughter, blood and combat; Tezeetch (sp?), God of magic, fate, forbidden knowledge; Nurgle, god of disease and entropy; and Slaanesh, God of excess, lust, and the satisfaction of earthly whims. These four gods seek to lead the Beings of the Mortal Realm (our galaxy) to ruin.
So, back to the new army, I love the idea of an army just getting stronger and stronger the more enemies you kill. The model isn't the coolest though:
Buuuut, then I found this beauty on ReaperMinis:
Beautiful!
This just sealed the deal for me, I knew then that there would need to be serious thought put to an army of Nurgle! Read on after the break to witness my plan unfold!!

<-<-<-----------
Now, the troops of Nurgle, as a whole, have a few glaring flaws and a few superb strengths. The biggest problem, they're slow. Like reeeealy reeealy slow. They creep across the field. The second is, in terms of hand-to-hand combat, they're terrible. However, their strength lies in other areas. The biggest thing about Nurgle is, on the whole, they are Monstrously Durable. Get these guys into position, and they will be nigh impossible to shift for almost the entire game. This forces your opponents into a war of attrition that they are unlikely to win. This, and the fact that their weapons are all poison, means that if they hit in combat (granted, unlikely) whatever they hit will probably be going down.
Another problem with Nurgle, and by-and-large all daemons is the severe lack of firepower. Ranged weapons and daemons apparently are non-compatible. So, while they're creeping across the field, they're getting shot at the whole way. The idea of not having a single ranged unit in the entire army is incredibly unnerving for me, so I knew I would have to turn to the only Ruinous Power packing heat (literally chucking fireballs) Tezeetch. His two mainstay units, Horrors and Flamers, are fantastic. The horrors, with 3 Str 4 shots rip through troops, specially those with average armor (AP4). The flamers have one of my favorite weapons ever, Breath of Chaos. This Template weapon always wounds on a 4+, with no armor saves or cover saves!! Death to anything, but especially those with heavy armor! And they can fly! Have I mentioned they're amazing?
So, my plan now, it to make a combination Nurgle and Tezeetch army, that looks all Nurgle-y. I just feel like it would fit better, specially with a model like Epidermis. Granted, he wont be nearly as useful in a mixed army, but I just can't pass up that model! The plan right now, is to use the Plaguebearers (basic troops of Nurgle) to tie up enemy units, while waiting for the Flamers and Horrors to come in a decimate anything in their path! This, with Daemon princes of Nurgle to act as another Wicked powerful force in close combat, and get more wounds for Nurgle, and Nurglings (little buggers of slime) to tie up things like Devastator and heavy weapons squads, i think the army could be pretty strong!
Now, onto the conversions! Heh, like I said, I've been busy!! Pretty much the army concept has evolved to something along the lines of an Imperial Guard mining outpost that, by some random chance, Father Nurgle decided to "bless" with his latest creation. But, ever working to thwart his rival Tezeetch mutated the plague, even as it hit. It did not kill the men, but left them twisted, mutated shadows of the men they once were. The doctrine of the Cult of the Emperor states that "thou shalt not suffer the Mutant to Live" and as such, they had to become renegade, retreat into the shadows, fighting just to stay alive in a desperate and dangerous Galaxy. First and foremost, they despise the empire, that sought to destroy them in their time of need. Further attempts have been made to re-open the mining operation that the disease interrupted, but is always thwarted by strange, masked figures, appearing out of the mist to wreak havoc on the unsuspecting Guardsmen, before vanishing again.
So that's the basic story, it needs to be fleshed out, and the details are likely to change, but that was sort of the idea i was working with when I put these ideas together:

So that's the basic story, it needs to be fleshed out, and the details are likely to change, but that was sort of the idea i was working with when I put these ideas together:
Plaguebearers:
Start with, you guessed it, vampire counts as a base!! These ghouls will be made to stand up straighter, and the bones they carry will be replace with bladed weapons. The tricky part will come when I try to give them the bloated, sick look that Plaguebearers are famous for. I'm thinking Green Stuff to fill in the hollow beneath the ribs.
The really fun part will come with the masks :) I plan to have the unifying theme of my army be gas masks for every unit, remnants of them attempting to avoid the plague. To that end I found these wonderful kits produced by PigIron:
Yay Gas-masks! So, the one on the Left will be for the Plaguebearer, and the one on the right will be for my Horrors conversion, which will basically be Imperial Guardsmen with Wires and cords running from their lasguns to their backs- into their bodies! Yay regurgitating slime!
Speaking of regurgitating slime... that's also the theme for my next unit! While flamers are described as 'shooting gouts of magical flame that wind their way into ever crack and crevice' the ability itself, Breath of Chaos, describes it as 'some daemons can spew a dense cloud of magical vapors or putrid corroding gas', obviously, the second one is of more interest to me!
The flamers are the one with the Breath of Chaos standard, and another cool conversion... This is one of my favorite ideas... it's also the one that I blatantly stole :) This is from the conversion blog 'SpikeyBits':
A combination of Imperial Guard and... Vampire Counts Grave Guard!! Heh, I just can't get away from those crazy vamps!! Mine wont be exactly like this one, however. No sword, for one. Also, since the flamers have the ability to fly around the field, I was thinking I'd give them some kind pack, like a marine pack. Also, since they have Breath of Chaos, i was going to give them a large gun, possibly a modified flamer, with cords and tubes running from it to a barrel of some kind on the back, containing the noxious goo he sprays on helpless enemies from above :)
Finally, my Daemon Princes! I fell in love with these guys from Forge World:
I figure the mining colony would probably have some huge Ogryns for heavy lifting and some big machinery operation :) These guy require no alterations and are just wicked cool in general :) Some even have three eyes, a sign of Nurgle! I'm thinking the guy in the back right first :)
So... that's the extent of it :) It feels good to be posting again :) See you guys again soon :)
